Art Theme: Personal Space?
Posted under Do It Yourself Interior DesignIf you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!
I'm doing art and design as an A Level next year and our theme is personal space. I'm struggling to think of what to draw etc.
Suggestions have been interior/exterior area, the interests of yourself or someone else's character, negative spaces (does anyone know what this means?), structure of objects in relation to their environment, closed or open space i.e. view through a door or window at the rear of your composition.
So does anyone else have any ideas?
mine's the coast!
-someone in a field
-you could draw a group of people on a busy street with a sort of barrier around one
-take photos of people in their element e.g.-in their bedroom
-someone in a garden
-someone reading a book under a tree in the park on a summers day
-someone doing the same as above^^ but everywhere except for an area around them(which is summer) is winter+snow
-as least pervy as possible-you could do some ones silhouette behind a screen (getting changed lol)
-you could paint a big room, but with a few people in it+ around the area which they are sitting is personalised:e.g. one person looks like they like rock music, so there's posters+the carpet has flames or black etc
you could do things like someone crying+really lonely who has too much personal space+needs someone else—+you could do one with someone who has lack of personal space
try to think outside the box!
just e-mail me if you're confused! lol
good luck!

what about doing positive and negative space using a weaving effect? theme could be your true self and alter-ego…
First, take a picture of yourself in B/W and then, look in the internet for your COLORED alter-ego;ex. spiderman, animal, can be anything…and then somehow WEAVE or think of ways you can combine them both together…then make a decision w/c one you want to do using POSITIVE (hint: alter-ego) and NEGATIVE (hint: true-self). think about it…it's still Personal Space…it's you…

Well "personal space" could mean your room (interior) or just some place where you spend a lot of time which can be outside, however that view through a window is a good idea to mix interior-exterior elements. You could draw a portion of some room with big open window that shows outside world, maybe a garden with a tree in bloom some people there or maybe even yourself. That's how you'll get linear structure of the room opposing nature from outside, also you could add some walls to create sense of your possession of that space. Negative spaces… that may be some place with harmful effects on people or that reminds us of suffering or any kind of negative emotions. And finally remember that an idea no mater how simple it seems when done right creates even better artwork. I hope this helps.

I think the most important thing that you need to do is to not get ideas from others. Making art is a personal experience, and although these are great ideas, they reflect other people's personalities. Making art is not just about skills, it is about CREATIVE THINKING and expressing who you are and what you think about. If the idea is Personal space you have to think about YOU because it is, in effect, a self-portrait.
Negative space is unoccupied space. If you think of a picture of a vase, the positive space is the vase, itself, and the negative space is everything else.
So now, think about personal spaces for you: Where do you go to relax? Where do you go when you want to be alone? What kind of space represents who you are as a person? What kind of space is scary? What kind of space would serve to symbolically represent you? Do you feel very small in the world (you could portray that by having a lot of negative space in the picture plane) Do you feel lost in a crowd? Do you feel like you take up alot of space in the world? Are you obsessed with being beautiful? Are you obsessed with being ugly? Is music a big part of your life? What are your relationships like with your family? Is there some part of yourself that you really love or hate? Are you afraid of the dark? Think about yourself. Start by journaling–make lists of things that attract or repel you. Think about places you love and places you hate. Think about aspects of your personality that can be symbolized with a space…are you messy? maybe the interior of a closet with clothes all over the place? Scared of the dark? A portrait of under your bed might be interesting. Think about using spaces relative to YOUR thinking and feeling.

i'd think of anything personal to me. places, memories, songs, images, people, what makes you you? negative spaces are the spaces left inbetween, for example, put your hands on your hips, the negative spaces are the triangles created by your elbows sticking out and your hands resting on your hips. i used negative space sketches at uni, they can be really interesting and make you think about things in a new light. maybe you could think about what makes you feel uncomfortable, ie, someone invaded your personal space, or maybe you are a spectator watching someone/ something invading some personal space. this could be anything from a cat sitting in a dog's bed to industry taking over fields/ nature.
